Actually, animal anatomy is VERY similar to human anatomy with different sizing on the bones. The structure is the same, obviously the hands become more weight being for animals because they walk on all fours, but they have shoulder blades on their front legs and hips in the backs, ribs, skull...its all there, just a little different.
to answer your question, yes I reference. I reference a lot for animals, the internet and library have been great sources, and I find if I just do some sketches and studies, the shapes break down pretty fast, then its just adding detail.

Thanx! I was using the color contrast to bring the focal point to the human character, so I guess it works.
